Nova

Franky slept, and I went outside the base to collect flowers and leaves. I was able to find four different kinds of each. Some were more decorative than they were useful, but they were bright and beautiful so I thought Franky would enjoy them. He’d asked about what I saw out here, and I wanted to show him—the way he had tried to show me. Bugs jumped up and down in the grass, the buzzing, humming, and flapping of their wings loud in my ears.

I kept moving through the tall grass, collecting things, until something landed on my arm and bit me. I slapped at my skin and blood splattered everywhere. I didn’t mean to kill it, but I acted on instinct. Something was hurting me so I wanted to do what I could to get it off. Another landed in my hair as I bent down to pick a purple flower that was shaped like the creatures bothering me. They did it as a defense mechanism, mimicking whatever creature around they found to be the strongest.

So, if they weren’t trying to look like me . . . then I needed to hurry up and go inside. I wasn’t safe out here anymore. The train was parked in front of the base, not set to go anywhere for a while, and the guards weren’t looking anywhere near me. I swatted at another bug fluttering in my face and yelped when teeth sunk into the skin of my neck. I shoved everything in my hands inside my satchel and rushed toward the base. I shouldn’t have wandered so far.

More of the same creatures swarmed around me. I was getting stung and bit all at once, missing all of them with my hands. “Help!’” I shouted.

One guard looked at me, but just kept watching as I continued to struggle. The last memory I had was of falling forward, and then everything went black.

“I got you,” a voice whispered in my ear. “You’re okay, Nova.” Loud grunts came from above me, and I had a headache from all the bobbing my head was doing. Opening my eyes hurt so I kept them shut for a little while longer as I was lifted higher.

“He could have died, and you all just stood there doing nothing.” Someone spoke again. I knew that voice, but I was out of it, and they sounded so distant. Warm arms wrapped tighter around me, and I snuggled into the comforting body, locking my arms around someone’s neck.

“Eh. One less of those freaks we have to worry about,” a raspier voice responded.

“What did you say? You’re on their grounds. Don’t fucking forget that, douchebag.”

“Franky,” I whispered.

“Yes. I’m here, Nova. What were you doing out there alone? Didn’t I tell you not to worry about paying me back?”

“Wanted to surprise you.”

I bounced a little in his arms. “You already have. Many times.”

“I think you’ll love what I collected,” I slurred.

“You can show me when you’re feeling better.” His warm lips brushed over my cheek.
